VOC free paint is defined as paint that has a content of 5 grams per litre (5 g/l) of voc's or less. Although there are paints that truly have none, the standard set by the EPA for low and no voc qualification are 5 g/l for zero VOC's and for Low VOC Paint the grams per litre depend upon the finish of the paint. The more glossy the paint the higher the chemical level

Paints that have a natural binder such as lime, milk, tempera (egg) or clay, bases that can be dissolved in water are a really good start but the third component of paint which is the pigment throws many paints right off the scale.

Farrow & Ball, based in Dorset, England has maintained strict control over the paints that carry their name by producing all of their paints themselves. The same ingredients have been used since 1946 to produce their high quality, earth friendly products that provide great coverage with brush strokes that quickly disappear. Farrow & Ball products are distributed worldwide and are the priciest paint on our list.

Mythic paint contains zero VOC's, no fungicides and no suspected carcinogens, . They offer online sales but only if you have NO access to an outlet that carries it. Delivery is available in the continental states of the US at no extra cost however, the cost of ordering from the company is higher than if you buy it through a distributor. If you purchase your paint from a distributor, ensure that they use the tints recommended by Mythic. The friendliness of the paint can be seriously compromised by the use of pigments that contain heavy metals and voc's.
